Weekly Photo Challenge: Dreamy

This week, we’d like to see an image that looks dreamy to you. A photo of a place you often visit in dreams. A snapshot of your dreamy boy- or girlfriend. A scene that looks a bit out-of-this world. Take us on a flight of fancy!

Do you see it? Hidden in a forest straight out of a Brothers Grimm story is Burg Eltz, a splendid German castle in the Mosel Valley. Remarkably, it has been in the same family for over 850 years.

Walking through the quiet pine forest only to see this fairy tale castle emerge through the trees did indeed have a dream-like, timeless quality. How many people over the centuries have trudged up this path and been greeted with exactly this sight? And how many more will follow?

Fantastic pick of a pic for the challenge, Barbara. What a wonderful winding path with a mystical magical castle peering out through the trees.

  4. Dreamy indeed….I like the soft greens and the verticals of the castle and the trees against the curve of the path.

    It’s beautiful….but I didn’t get past “the same family for 850 years”….

  10. There’s something about a path and then there’s something else about a path with a castle in the distance. 🙂

Now that looks like a fairy tale castle … the good kind, not the haunted, wicked witch kind 🙂

I was so glad to see this post of a familiar sight in Germany. Our family visited this castle while living in Germany (2004) and it is one of my favorites. I especially enjoyed the trek through the woods to get there. A very beautiful place. Thank you for sharing this post Barbara!

    • What a small world it is! I enjoyed the castle too, Jennifer, but the forest was my favorite thing. It felt exactly as I imagine a Hansel and Gretel forest to look and smell. So glad to bring back a good memory for you.

It is a dreamy photo Barbara. I’ve seen a few castles in Germany also, and walked up those paths, but didn’t have the breath to take photos at the same time. It’s truly amazing to see the centuries old buildings in Europe that have stood the test of time, and then return home to find so much shoddy workmanship here, due to the greed of the builders. But no, I’m just going to focus on your castle now and dream. And maybe look at some of my own photos of dream like places. Thanks for sharing this one. It takes me back to such a beautiful time and place.

    • Our definition of old and Europe’s are two different things entirely, aren’t they? I’m curious if you’ve been to our “castles” yet in your travels. There is the Biltmore in North Carolina, for one, and then of course the mansions in Newport. I’ve never seen San Simeon in California but hear it is quite something too. I’m happy you enjoyed this post!

I sold real estate for many years in a former life and had many Swiss clientele. They were unimpressed with our stick-built construction to say the least.

I think the photograph would be excellent as a poster with a wise quotation added, one about wonder, imagination and dreams.
When I think of dreamy now, I think of a special escape place, a vacation. This is out of my budget, for now, but it is in my ‘dreams.’ I used to think of a ‘hunk’ or a handsome man, when someone mentioned ‘dreamy!’ How time changes one’s perspective!

  23. What a gorgeous view. I’d love my drive to end at such a sight, but I imagine it’d be a drafty place to life. Heating and air conditioning costs would make me wake up from this dream state real fast. 😉

    • You are so right, Judy. The size of the fireplaces in the castle rooms are big enough to comfortably park a truck. It was a very warm September day when we were there and the rooms were quite chilly. I can only imagine what they’re like in the dead of winter.
